How to Say Goodbye: Christmas Eve Elf Ideas

End the elf season with a sweet send-off. Goodbye letters, small gifts and a few traditions worth keeping.

By Shannon Dhokia

The arrival gets all the attention, but the goodbye is where the memories stick. A thoughtful Christmas Eve send-off closes the season sweetly and gives kids something to look forward to next year.

The goodbye letter

Keep it short and specific. Mention one or two moments from the season (“I loved watching you share your cookies with your sister”), remind them the elf will be watching from the North Pole, and promise to come back next year. Every Lol & Elf kit includes a Christmas Eve goodbye note to make this part easy.

A small parting gift

It doesn’t need to be big: Christmas pajamas, a new book, a hot-cocoa packet or a candy cane with a note. The point is a final “I see you and I’m proud of you.”

Traditions worth starting

  • The goodbye wave. Kids wave at the window before bed on Christmas Eve.
  • The North Pole postcard. A note “from the elf” arrives in January saying they made it home safe.
  • The memory jar. Write one favorite elf moment on a slip of paper and save it for next year.

What about the sad kids?

Some little ones take the goodbye hard. Lean into the comeback: the elf is going home to help Santa, and it gets to come back next December 1. That’s only 11 months! (Don’t tell them that’s a long time.)

Skip the midnight scramble.

Every Lol & Elf kit includes an arrival setup, North Pole letter and 24 nightly idea cards. $45, or $40 each for 2+.
