Elf Ideas by Age: From Toddlers to Tweens

What works for a 3-year-old flops with a 10-year-old. Here’s how to match your elf setups to your kids’ ages.

By Shannon Dhokia

The same elf setup can thrill a preschooler and get an eye-roll from a fifth grader. Here’s how to match the magic to the kid.

Toddlers (2–4): simple and visual

Little ones love things they can spot right away. Bright colors, favorite toys and food. Think: elf hugging a stuffed animal, elf in a bowl of cereal, elf “reading” their favorite book. Keep it safe and away from anything breakable or swallowable.

Little kids (5–7): silly and a little naughty

This is peak elf age. They love mischief they can tell their friends about: toilet-paper snowballs, mustaches on family photos, elf stuck in the cookie jar. Add a short note each morning; early readers love decoding a message.

Big kids (8–10): puzzles and challenges

Older kids want to be challenged. Riddles that lead to a treat, a scavenger hunt across the house, a tic-tac-toe game they get to finish, or a “mission” for the day. This is also a great age for kindness challenges.

Tweens (11+): in on the fun

If you have an older kid who’s figured things out, recruit them! Make them a “Junior Elf Helper” who plans and sets up scenes for younger siblings. It keeps the magic alive for everyone, and they usually love the job.

Mixed ages at home? Go with ideas the youngest can enjoy and give the oldest a role.

Our 24 idea cards include a mix of simple, silly and puzzle-style setups, so there’s something for every age in the house.

Skip the midnight scramble.
