Forgot to Move the Elf? 7 Saves That Actually Work

It happens to every parent. Here are seven believable, kid-tested explanations for an elf that didn’t move.

By Shannon Dhokia

It’s 6:45 a.m., a small person is shouting “HE DIDN’T MOVE!” and you are holding your coffee very still. Welcome to the club. Every elf family has been here, and here are seven saves that work.

1. “He was so tired from the trip to the North Pole.”

Santa’s workshop is busy in December. Elves fly back every night to report in, and sometimes they come home too tired to pick a new spot. Simple, believable, done.

2. “Maybe someone touched him?”

Use carefully. If you have a rule about not touching the elf, a no-move day can mean he “lost a little magic” and needs a night to recharge. Have the kids write a sorry note to fix it.

3. The “I liked the view” note

Quickly scribble a note in tiny handwriting while the kids get dressed: “I loved this spot so much I asked Santa if I could stay one more day!” Then sneak it next to the elf.

4. Blame the weather

“There was a big snowstorm at the North Pole last night, so all the elves stayed home.” Bonus points if it’s actually cold outside. (In Texas, good luck.)

5. Make it a game

“He’s testing you! He wants to see if you notice the one tiny thing he changed.” Then move something small while they search.

6. The double move

Missed a night? Make the next night extra-memorable so nobody remembers the miss. Grab a bigger idea card and go all out.

7. Set a phone reminder (prevention!)

The real fix: a nightly 9:30 p.m. alarm labeled with something kid-proof like “laundry.” Pair it with a stack of ready-made idea cards and you’ll rarely need saves 1 through 6.

Every Lol & Elf kit includes 24 idea cards, so the hardest part of the night is remembering. We can’t help with that, but your phone can.

Skip the midnight scramble.

Every Lol & Elf kit includes an arrival setup, North Pole letter and 24 nightly idea cards. $45, or $40 each for 2+.
