The Kindness Elf: 12 Ideas That Teach Kids to Give

Turn your elf into a little ambassador of kindness with 12 simple prompts that put the focus on giving.

By Shannon Dhokia

Mischief is fun. But some of the sweetest elf moments happen when the elf asks the kids to do something for someone else. A “kindness elf” night or two each week keeps the season focused on what matters most: giving, gratitude and family.

12 kindness prompts your elf can leave behind

  1. Write a thank-you note to your teacher, coach or bus driver.
  2. Pick three toys to donate to kids who need them.
  3. Draw a picture for a grandparent and mail it.
  4. Make a card for a neighbor you don’t know very well yet.
  5. Bake (or decorate) cookies for your local firefighters or police officers.
  6. Pay a compliment to everyone at dinner tonight.
  7. Help with one chore without being asked.
  8. Pack a care bag of snacks and socks for someone in need.
  9. Call or video-chat a relative who lives far away.
  10. Leave a kind note in a library book.
  11. Say a prayer or a thank-you for someone in your family, out loud, at bedtime.
  12. Tell your brother or sister one thing you love about them.

How to make it stick

Keep a simple “Kindness Report” on the fridge. Each time the kids complete a prompt, they write it down for the elf to take back to Santa. By Christmas Eve, they’ll have a list they’re genuinely proud of, and that’s better than any toy.

The best elf nights end with a kid saying, “Can we do another one tomorrow?”

Our kits include a mix of silly and sweet idea cards, so your elf can be both the mischief-maker and the kindness coach.

Skip the midnight scramble.

Every Lol & Elf kit includes an arrival setup, North Pole letter and 24 nightly idea cards. $45, or $40 each for 2+.
